Beware of Phishing Attacks - DO NOT provide your UTORmail/UTORexchange password to anyone or any site

From Network Services (Aug. 11/11)::

We have reports of email sent to various destinations around the world being blocked. In most cases, the sender (at the University of Toronto) should get back an email message saying their original message was "not deliverable" or "rejected".

The University of Toronto is currently sending out large amounts of spam, and this has lowered our University's "reputation score". This score is automatically tracked by various external agencies, and used by many post offices in the world to reject mail.

This is the reason that Microsoft Windows Live Hotmail started automatically blocking UTORmail and UTORExchange on Sunday. Microsoft was nice enough to unblock us quickly, and service to Hotmail was restored by Monday.

However, we are getting reports from UofT members that many more sites around the world are rejecting messages sent using UTORmail and UTORExchange.

Technical Details

At least six UTORids were compromised in the last three days. We think the UTORid owners responded with their password to a phishing attack.

The phishers used the compromised UTORids to successfully send large amounts of spam to the world.
